7 Foods Everbody Over 40 Should Eat
Once we hit a certain age, everybody wants to slow down the aging process. One of the simplest ways to stay young is to avoid eating unhealthy food.
But there’s a flip side to that equation: There are certain foods that have extraordinary anti-aging properties. If we load our diet with them, they can dramatically slow our body’s life clock. “Too often, people think about what they are eating only when they are trying to lose weight, but eating certain foods can not only potentially lengthen your life, but also improve the quality of your life as well,” says Charles Platkin, M.D., professor of nutrition and distinguished lecturer at the CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College.
Here is Dr. Platkin’s list of foods everybody over 40 should eat: Read the rest of this entry
Treating IBS Naturally
Analyze your eating habits to find the cause of your pain. While IBS is not caused by the foods you eat, they can increase or trigger attacks of pain. Keep a diet journal that records the food you eat as well as how those foods make you feel afterwards.
Many IBS-sufferers have wheat and dairy intolerances, so you might consider eliminating them from your diet to gauge the impact. To ensure you do not lose out on nutrients , take vitamin supplements daily.
If diarrhea is a problem, remove foods and drinks containing caffeine, high fat levels and sweeteners from your diet. These are all known laxatives that, to be honest, your body can do without. Instead of a cup of coffee, have the recommended eight glasses of water a day to ensure you don’t suffer dehydration.
Constipation can be alleviated by introducing soluble fiber into your diet. Foods such as whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables are rich sources of fiber and vitamins.
IBS can often be worsened by high stress levels. Combat stress by learning relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation. Some sufferers find that hypnotherapy offers relaxation and helps them deal with stress more efficiently shiatsu massage or an abdominal massage will relax both mind and body.
Consider introducing dietary supplements. While offering full benefits, these natural remedies avoid traditional medicine’s side effects.
Aloe Vera juice, sourced from the aloe plant’s inner-leaf gel, can help relieve discomfort by reducing intestinal spasms, abdominal pain and bloating.
Probiotics, the ‘friendly bacteria’, flourish naturally within the gut. Over 300 varieties inhabit the intestines: some good and some bad. Illness, antibiotics and stress can shift the balance between good and bad which is believed to lead to bowel trouble. Live bacteria yogurts as well as probiotic drinks and yogurts can help your body redress the balance.
Herbal remedies, given by natural health practitioners, can help relieve symptoms. Many use peppermint, an ingredient long known for its digestive healing properties. Its properties as a carminative herb mean that it can eliminate excessive, painful and embarrassing gas. It reduces abdominal pain and bloating of the gut by easing intestinal muscle contractions. Peppermint can be taken in many forms: tea, oil, inhalant or capsules. It is advised that IBS sufferers only take enteric-coated peppermint capsules to reduce the risk of heartburn.
The Orient’s healing traditions offer cures for IBS through therapies such as acupuncture. The World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health Consensus Panel both consider acupuncture an appropriate treatment for IBS-related conditions including: cramps, constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Within just four weeks of treatment, many trained practitioners see their clients reducing their pain and symptoms significantly.
Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are often successful with IBS sufferers for several reasons. It is a stress-related disorder, in that stress can trigger painful spasms in the bowel, so a session with a therapist can help to encourage relaxation from day-to-day tensions. It also teaches the sufferer ways of reducing and dealing with IBS-related pains of virtually any intensity. A long-term benefit of this treatment is that it encourages new ways to reduce daily stress by programming the subconscious with positive responses to stress triggers.

Organic Kelp
Organic kelp is a type of brown algae similar to seaweed that is grown without added chemicals or artificial products that could harm the environment. Kelp is often taken as a dietary supplement, primarily as a treatment for thyroid problems. Some studies have suggested that sea kelp contains agents that decrease fat absorption to the body. For these reasons, and because of the many vitamins and minerals typically found in organic kelp, this algae is thought to fight obesity.
Iodine can be found in dense doses in organic kelp. The element is essential for normal body functioning, especially in the thyroid gland. When the body does not get enough iodine, the thyroid cannot produce enough hormones. The resulting condition is called hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism has many serious health consequences such as weight increase and extreme fatigue. A mental imbalance could also occur, causing depression and other severe problems. Organic kelp in the diet can help to ensure proper amounts of iodine, possibly avoiding major health risks.
In addition to iodine, kelp often has considerable levels of both calcium and magnesium. These two elements are often found together in dietary supplements because they can complement one another during absorption by the body. Without calcium and magnesium, both the bones and muscle would deteriorate, leaving one’s body vulnerable to cardiovascular problems, fractures, and fatigue.

Raw, organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurized, apple cider vinegar is so much more than a salad dressing!
1. Apple cider vinegar is a completely natural product. It is made from apple juice and is fermented to hard apple cider. It is then fermented a second time to apple cider vinegar. When using natural apple cider vinegar, we instantly decrease the consumption of unnatural chemicals in our homes and daily lives.
2. Apple cider vinegar can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing, and will aid in increased body and shine. I recommend recycling an old shampoo bottle, then filling it with 1/2 a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour the solution through your hair after shampooing several times a week for dramatic results.
